London schoolgirl’s life with sickle cell immortalised in children’s book to inspire a new generation of Black heritage blood donors

A London schoolgirl’s experience of living with sickle cell has been immortalised in a children’s book commissioned by NHS Blood and Transplant and given free to all Brixton primary schools during Sickle Cell Awareness Month (September 2025).

A way of giving back

James Mackay’s daughter Emilia was saved by a stem cell transplant after being diagnosed with a rare blood disorder at just five years of age. Now, platelet donor James is on a mission to give back by encouraging others to join the register.

"I still wanted to make a difference"

Upon learning that there wasn’t high demand for her blood type, primary school teacher Emma Greenwood found another way to make a lifesaving difference: giving plasma.
