Amazing Stories - Jan Marsh

“Dedication is a selfless devotion”: My Story

I became very ill in January 2009. I was a nurse myself once, but becoming a patient was a totally new ball game. To be disabled and fighting illness has come so hard for me. I started having plasma exchange about 2 years ago; for me, a vital treatment. At first it was 10 sessions over 2 weeks. That lasted for 2 to 3 months. But for the last year I've had plasma exchange once a week. Just that alone for some people is enough. But March 2010, I spent 9 weeks in a trauma ward after a bad fall. I'm now under going some radial treatment basically to give me a new immune system.

What I wanted to say is just how blown away I am at the incredibly amazing apheresis unit at Southmead Blood Donor Unit.

I admire the way they help each other in covering all aspects of their work – always with a high standard of cleanliness and wearing the NHS logo proudly. They are constantly encouraging each other and sharing vital information with each other. Their integrity is second to none. I can honestly say I have never heard them run each other down to other patients or each other. They never moan about their personal lives or bring problems to work; they just build each other up. They are always so cool under pressure. I've been on the end of this one.

For me as a patient, they always make me feel like I'm the only one in the unit. But they make all of their patients feel like that. They know all my children by their names and they make them feel special when they bring me in for exchange. The day I will always remember was when my line was blocked and I needed a drug to run through the line. My doctors came down to help but the doctor in charge ask the team who was prepared to stay behind and help. He only needed two to help. Every one of them (five) put their hands up. This blew me away.

No matter what crisis it is I'm facing; needing exchange on other wards or hospitals when I’m poorly, they always come to me with all the equipment and exchange. Nothing is ever too much trouble.

I feel this team deserve some recognition and thank you for the work they do. Ground-breaking stem cell collections… the list goes on. Basically just caring about making a difference. Pulling together as a team is rare commodity these days. But their compassion and genuine caring nature is so enduring. Please please please nominate this unit for the best team award.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your amazing care.
It gives me hope for the future.

Yours faithfully,
Mrs. J. Marsh
