Newham Council to lead new initiative to promote blood and organ donation amongst residents
On Wednesday 14 December, the London Borough of Newham will become the first council to sign a formal partnership agreement with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) aimed at increasing organ and blood donation rates among residents. Building on the support already provided by other councils, the two year agreement will allow efforts to be sustained and momentum to be maintained in awareness-raising efforts.

Impact of industrial action on blood donor sessions
Industrial action on 30 November had the potential to affect NHS Blood and Transplant’s (NHSBT) ability to hold our usual number of blood donor sessions. There were uncertainties on how the action could affect staff and the venues booked for many of our mobile sessions, with the possibility that some venues would not be open.

Changes to blood donor guidelines
The permanent exclusion of men who have sex with men from donating blood has been lifted today (Monday 7 November) and replaced by a 12 month fixed period of deferral from the last relevant sexual contact.
